A total of 97 Siemens 6MW turbines are due to be installed at the site, located 45 kilometres off the mainland. Vessels specialist A2Sea – jointly owned by Siemens and Dong – is using its Sea Challenger ship to install the turbines.
Construction at the project began in April, with the installation of the first monopile by vessels firm GeoSea.
German fabricator EEW was hired by foundations contractor Bladt Industries to supply the steel “XL” monopiles. Bladt supplied the turbine transition pieces.
The foundations are 7.5 metres in diameter and weigh up to 939 tonnes. Dong said it is the largest monopile to be installed in the German North Sea.
The project has been split into two phases, the 330MW Gode Wind 1 and 252MW Gode Wind 2. Dong agreed to sell half of Gode Wind 2 to a consortium of Danish pension funds in July 2014. The project will become Germany’s largest offshore wind project when it is completed in 2016.
Once online, the power produced by Gode Wind will be transmitted to the German grid via the 916MW DolWin Beta converter station, installation of which was completed by electrical systems specialist ABB today (10 August).
